Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina announced his retirement, even after coming off his first 20-win season.
Mussina, who turns 40 next month, was 270-153 with a 3.68 ERA in 18 seasons in the majors. Two Phillies to have surgery
Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley will have surgery and may not be ready for the start of the 2009 regular season.
Utley will have surgery next week to repair any bone or cartilage damage he may have in his right hip.
Third baseman Pedro Feliz also will have have surgery -- on his back.
Cards close to deal
The St . Louis Cardinals are close to a contract agreement with left-handed reliever Trever Miller.
The deal likely will be finalized today. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Miller came to the city for a physical and met with team doctors, but a deal hadn't been completed.
The 35-year-old Miller was 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA and two saves in 68 games last season for the AL champion Tampa Bay Rays.
Owners meeting
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig announced the sport will enact a rules change stating that postseason games can't be shortened because of bad weather.
"All postseason games, All-Star games and that, will be full-length affairs, and the rule will be so written," Selig said, following an owners meeting.
Selig said the change also will apply to tiebreaker games that decide division titles and wild-card berths.
