MOST IMPORTANT TRADE: Baltimore sent C Ramon Hernandez to Cincinnati. That opens a spot for super-prospect Matt Wieters, who hit .355 between Class A and Class AA.

BIGGEST HOLE TO FILL: Catcher in Boston. If Jason Varitek doesn't accept the Red Sox's one-year offer, they will have to trade for someone.

MOST ACTIVE TEAM: Yankees. They have added 1B Nick Swisher, along with Sabathia and righty A.J. Burnett while pursuing even more pitching and have their hands in just about everything else going on.

BEST UNDER-THE-RADAR MOVE: Orioles sign SS Cesar Izturis. Baltimore HAD to get someone to play shortstop, and Izturis will at least anchor the infield defensively.

TOP UNSIGNED FREE AGENT: OF Bobby Abreu. The Yankees won't keep him, but Abreu joins Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez as the only players with 100 or more RBI in each of the past six seasons.

MOST IMPROVED TEAM: Yankees. Sabathia can take the 31 starts they gave to Sidney Ponson, Ian Kennedy and Carl Pavano. And that's before you factor in Burnett. Quite an upgrade.

TEAM WITH THE MOST LEFT TO DO: Yankees. They still need one more starter — probably either Andy Pettitte or Ben Sheets — and would like a veteran center fielder.

AL Central

TOP SIGNING: Closer Kerry Wood to the Indians. Cleveland had a 5.13 relief ERA last season, second-worst in the AL. The Tribe had to get a closer.

MOST IMPORTANT TRADE: Tigers acquire Edwin Jackson. For a fourth outfielder (Matt Joyce), Detroit got depth in their rotation — necessary after last year's disaster. If Dontrelle Willis, Nate Robertson or Jeremy Bonderman has a problem, Detroit is covered.

BIGGEST HOLE TO FILL: Tigers closer. But there are still options out there, such as free agent Brian Fuentes.

MOST ACTIVE TEAM: White Sox. They have traded Nick Swisher and Javier Vazquez and may not be done revamping the roster.

BEST UNDER-THE-RADAR MOVE: Cleveland's part in the three-way J.J. Putz deal. The Indians now have a solid bullpen of Wood, Joe Smith, Rafael Betancourt and Rafael Perez.

TOP UNSIGNED FREE AGENT: SS Orlando Cabrera. The White Sox don't want him back, but Cabrera can still help someone.

MOST IMPROVED TEAM: Kansas City. Trading two relievers for two position players (Mike Jacobs and Coco Crisp) is a net plus.

TEAM WITH THE MOST LEFT TO DO: White Sox. Chicago will probably add a pitcher, and Jermaine Dye could be moved.

AL West

TOP SIGNING: None. Since Rafael Furcal turned down Oakland's four-year offer.

MOST IMPORTANT TRADE: Oakland acquired OF Matt Holliday. The A's declared they are going to make a run at the division title in 2009 with this move.

BIGGEST HOLE TO FILL: First base in Seattle. Somehow, Russell Branyan doesn't seem to be the final answer there.

MOST ACTIVE TEAM: Mariners. By trading closer J.J. Putz, Seattle used its most attractive chip to add some depth to the organization.

BEST UNDER-THE-RADAR MOVE: CF Franklin Guttierez, whom the Mariners got from Cleveland in the Putz deal, could be a star.

TOP UNSIGNED FREE AGENT: 1B Mark Teixeira. And it seems like he's destined to go East.

MOST IMPROVED TEAM: A's. Holliday adds much-needed offense, and so would Furcal if the A's can get him to re-consider their offer.

TEAM WITH THE MOST LEFT TO DO: Mariners. There's a long way to go after losing 100 games and hiring a new management team.
