--With the game still on the line at 4-2, RHP Blaine Boyer was allowed to pitch to left-handed-hitting Milwaukee 1B Prince Fielder with two on and nobody out in the seventh. Boyer, who had retired Fielder the only time he had faced him, gave up a three-run homer this time. "Boyer's pitched well against this club," said La Russa. "He was trying to sink the ball down and away and he got the ball in the middle of the plate. I think we can use our lefties against them, but I didn't that was the place for it." --RHP Chris Carpenter, after throwing some 20 pitches in a bullpen session, was cleared to return to the rotation on Wednesday at home against Chicago. Carpenter didn't give up an earned run in 10 innings in his first two starts before suffering a torn left oblique muscle on April 14.
MEDICAL WATCH:
INF Brendan Ryan (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 30. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Memphis on May 12, and he was activated May 15.
RF Ryan Ludwick (strained right hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list May 13.
CF Rick Ankiel (sore right shoulder, head) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 5. He is expected to return as soon as he is eligible.
RHP Chris Carpenter (torn left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He threw a bullpen session May 12. He is expected to be activated to start May 20.
3B Troy Glaus (right shoulder surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He didn't heal as quickly as was hoped, and he may not play before July.
LHP Jaime Garcia (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He likely will miss all or nearly all of the 2009 season.
