--SS Khalil Greene, his average down to .217, was replaced by rookie Tyler Greene on Thursday. Tyler Greene probably will play Friday, based on his two hits and a stolen base Thursday. Manager Tony La Russa said Khalil Greene had "shown flashes of looking better, but I don't think he's real pleased with the way he's been playing." Asked if he was particularly concerned because Greene is coming off a bad year in San Diego (.213), La Russa said, "You worry about a guy who never looks at himself. You worry about a guy who puts too much on himself. There's a kind of balance you need there to survive in this sport. He's definitely conscientious."
--RHP Kyle Lohse, bothered this year by the flu, a knee injury, a bruise on his left elbow and a sore back, said he had a normal week this week. "For about the third time in seven weeks," Lohse said. "Normal" included Lohse being able to throw a rare bullpen session in Pittsburgh on Tuesday in preparation for his start against Milwaukee on Friday night. --RF Ryan Ludwick, placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday after suffering a strained right hamstring, was walking much better Thursday. It is possible Ludwick will take some minor league at-bats while still on the disabled list if he continues to heal as quickly as he has so far.

RF Ryan Ludwick (strained right hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list May 13.
CF Rick Ankiel (sore right shoulder, head) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 5. He is expected to return as soon as he is eligible.
INF Brendan Ryan (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 30. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Memphis on May 12.
RHP Chris Carpenter (torn left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He threw a bullpen session May 12, and he will throw a simulated game May 15. He could be activated in late May.
3B Troy Glaus (right shoulder surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He didn't heal as quickly as was hoped, and he may not play before July.
LHP Jaime Garcia (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He likely will miss all or nearly all of the 2009 season.
