St. Louis Cardinals Roster Report 2009-05-08
--CF Rick Ankiel, not healing quickly after crashing into the wall Monday night, was sent back to the Cardinals' spring training base in Jupiter, Fla., where he lives, to begin his rehabilitation when ready. Ankiel was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Originally, it had been thought Ankiel might be out only a few days, but manager Tony La Russa said, "He's still got so much soreness that they're figuring it's going to be a week or 10 days before that soreness is gone and before he can even start working out." Ankiel has general soreness, but mostly in his right shoulder, where he has deep contusions.

--OF Shane Robinson, 24, was brought up from Class AAA Memphis, where he was hitting .345. He replaces injured OF Rick Ankiel. Robinson, who grounded out as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning, was summoned instead of OF Joe Mather, who was in St. Louis half of last season. Mather has been struggling to get his average over .200 at Memphis. "(Robinson) will start some games for us," manager Tony La Russa said. "He has a lot of value. His exposure in spring training was a positive one. We got an eyeful of what he can do. Then you see (how) successful he was down there. He's got the kind of stroke that gets your attention. He can put a charge into a ball."

--INF Brendan Ryan, recovering from a strained hamstring, thought he was going to Class A Quad Cities this weekend to begin his rehabilitation, but, deemed not ready, he accompanied the team to Cincinnati and then will go to Class AAA Memphis next week to start his rehab. "I can't go at (the speed) I want to go at," he said.

CF Rick Ankiel (sore right shoulder, head) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 5.

INF Brendan Ryan (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 30. He will start a rehab assignment with Class AAA Memphis during the week of May 11-17.

RHP Chris Carpenter (torn left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen session May 12. Carpenter is likely out six to eight weeks.

3B Troy Glaus (right shoulder surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He didn't heal as quickly as was hoped, and he may not play before July.

LHP Jaime Garcia (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He likely will miss all or nearly all of the 2009 season.
