St. Louis Cardinals Roster Report 2009-05-01

St. Louis Cardinals Roster Report 2009-05-01
The Cardinals committed a league-high 20 errors in their first 19 games -- five by new SS Khalil Greene -- but they generally overcame any defensive deficiencies by batting .299 for that period and leading the league in slugging percentage and on-base percentage besides having the second-ranked earned run average.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Mitchell Boggs turned in his second straight good start in place of injured RHP Chris Carpenter. Boggs fanned nine in six innings. "He's got a lot of movement," manager Tony La Russa said, "and he's improved his off-speed pitches." His next scheduled start will be a test: against the defending champion Phillies on Tuesday.

--INF Brendan Ryan, who suffered a left hamstring strain while running out a foul grounder Wednesday, was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

--SS Tyler Greene, a first-round draftee in 2005, was brought up from Class AAA Memphis. Greene picked up his first major league hit and stolen base Thursday.

--2B Skip Schumaker extended his hitting streak to 11 games and also made a diving stop. He slowly but surely is becoming an adequate second baseman, which was his and the club's stated goal.

--RHP Blaine Boyer was impressive in a perfect seventh inning Thursday.

MEDICAL WATCH:

SS Khalil Greene (sore right forearm) didn't play April 29. He appeared as a pinch hitter 30.

INF Brendan Ryan (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 30.

RHP Chris Carpenter (torn left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He is likely out six to eight weeks.

3B Troy Glaus (right shoulder surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He didn't heal as quickly as was hoped, and he may not play before July.
