St. Louis Cardinals Roster Report 2009-04-30

St. Louis Cardinals Roster Report 2009-04-30
The Cardinals committed a league-high 20 errors in their first 19 games -- five by new SS Khalil Greene -- but they generally overcame any defensive deficiencies by batting .299 for that period and leading the league in slugging percentage and on-base percentage besides having the second-ranked earned run average.

PLAYER NEWS:

--The Cardinals are likely to have to make a move before Thursday night's game at Washington, with SS Khalil Greene nursing a sore right forearm and INF Brendan Ryan suffering from a tight hamstring. Manager Tony La Russa had only four bench men when Wednesday's game began, and he said, "I don't know how much more short-handed we can get."

--One of the run-scoring singles by was a bloop hit by 2B Skip Schumaker, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games. With the injuries to SS Khalil Greene and backup SS Brendan Ryan, Schumaker started and finished the game at second base. "I'm not used to being in there in the ninth inning at second base," said Schumaker, who normally closes games in the outfield.

--RHP Chris Perez fanned the only hitter he faced, getting Atlanta's Jeff Francoeur in the seventh inning. On Monday, Perez struck out C David Ross, the only man he faced in the seventh inning. Both Perez and RHP Jason Motte have pitched well as setup men, when it was thought this spring that one or the other would be the closer.

MEDICAL WATCH:

SS Khalil Greene (sore right forearm) didn't play April 29, and he might miss a few more games.

INF Brendan Ryan (tight hamstring) left the April 29 game.

RHP Chris Carpenter (torn left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He is likely out six to eight weeks.

3B Troy Glaus (right shoulder surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He didn't heal as quickly as was hoped, and he may not play before July.

LHP Jaime Garcia (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He likely will miss all or nearly all of the 2009 season.
