St. Louis Cardinals Roster Report 2009-04-28
The Cardinals committed a league-high 20 errors in their first 19 games -- five by new SS Khalil Greene -- but they generally overcame any defensive deficiencies by batting .299 for that period and leading the league in slugging percentage and on-base percentage besides having the second-ranked earned run average.

--RHP Joel Pineiro, a career .082 hitter before this season, worked out a walk for the third straight game, and he came around to score a run. He scored on Chris Duncan's single in the seventh to make the score 3-1.

--SS Brendan Ryan gave SS Khalil Greene, who had committed five of the team's 20 errors, a night off. "The shortstop had a great day," said manager Tony La Russa. "You've got to give him special credit. If he misses any of (his good plays), who knows what the outcome is?" The acrobatic Ryan praised the pitchers and was reluctant to talk about his defense other than to say, "I want to make every play -- everything I can get to."

--RHP Kyle Lohse, who jammed his right knee on a fielding play last week, tested it by running in the outfield Monday and said he should be able to start Tuesday night in Atlanta. "Everything felt good -- better than I thought it would," he said.

RHP Kyle Lohse (twisted right knee) was hurt during the April 23 game. He had an MRI on April 24, tested it on April 27 and said he'll make his April 28 start.

RHP Chris Carpenter (torn left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He is likely out six to eight weeks.

3B Troy Glaus (right shoulder surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He didn't heal as quickly as was hoped, and he may not play before July.

LHP Jaime Garcia (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He likely will miss all or nearly all of the 2009 season.
