--RHP Chris Carpenter's MRI exam showed he has a torn left oblique muscle, an injury suffered while he was batting in the fourth inning of Tuesday's game at Arizona. Carpenter received an injection. He will be re-evaluated next week and then start his rehabilitation. He likely will be out four to six weeks.

--RHP P.J. Walters will make his big-league debut Friday when he faces the Cubs. Walters isn't a hard thrower, but does throw strikes. He worked seven scoreless innings in his only start for Class AAA Memphis this season.

--RF Ryan Ludwick's infield hit in the first inning extended his hitting streak to 19 games, counting eight last year. Ludwick again batted fourth behind 1B Albert Pujols, although Pujols was walked intentionally two times, which will be a trend Cubs manager Lou Piniella and probably others will practice.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Chris Carpenter (torn left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He is likely out four to six weeks.

3B Troy Glaus (right shoulder surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He didn't heal as quickly as was hoped, and he may not play before July.

LHP Jaime Garcia (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He likely will miss all or nearly all of the 2009 season.
