--OF Joe Mather will be lost for the balance of the regular season after suffering a cracked bone in his left hand, an injury that became more pronounced when he tried to check his swing Monday. Mather will have surgery to remove the bone, a procedure considered routine, in Phoenix on Thursday. He will be sidelined six weeks.
--LHP Jaime Garcia, who disclosed left elbow discomfort to the club after being sent to the minors last week, reportedly is seeking a second opinion to see if he needs ligament replacement surgery. Garcia had a sprained elbow ligament last year but opted not to have surgery. --RHP Chris Carpenter made his first relief appearance for the Cardinals and his first in the big leagues since 2000, when he pitched for Toronto. Carpenter allowed hits to the first two hitters he faced in the seventh but then pitched out of the inning. "It looked like he had a lot of life on the ball," manager Tony La Russa said.
--C Yadier Molina is 19-for-50 (.380) over his 14-game hitting streak. INF/OF Felipe Lopez is 14-for-34 (.412) in his 10-game streak.
