The stellar run of Kyle Lohse ended at 14. Lohse had won nine straight decisions and had five no-decisions in his last 14 starts before he encountered former Minnesota teammate Johan Santana on Sunday. Lohse also couldn't locate what he'd had doing when he was 12-2.
"I didn't make many good pitches and they made me pay for it," said Lohse, who lasted just five innings, giving up seven runs, and was drummed out in a four-run New York sixth. On the upside, Albert Pujols homered for the second day in a row after not homering for 17 games.
And Jason Isringhausen, the former closer who was mopping up Sunday, mowed down the Mets' 3-4-5 hitters in order in a spotless eighth. He may be in line for more significant roles with the Cardinals or may be more attractive for a possible trade, which he would have to approve.
METS 9, CARDINALS 1: The Cardinals didn't seem to have much jump after a five-hour, nine-minute, 14-inning win on Saturday, but Johan Santana had something to do with that. The Cardinals had just one runner in scoring position other than Albert Pujols' seventh-inning homer, his 20th.
