St. Louis Cardinals Inside Pitch 2009-05-05
The Cardinals lost a game and a center fielder, at least for a while, Monday night.

Kyle Lohse, after being hit in his non-pitching elbow by a pitch from Philadelphia's Joe Blanton in the third inning, came unraveled in the next two innings. He allowed a two-run homer by Jayson Werth in the fourth and a grand slam by Ryan Howard in the fifth.

Lohse (3-1) didn't finish the fifth inning and center fielder Rick Ankiel didn't finish the game after crashing into the wall following his brilliant grab of Pedro Feliz's drive to left center in the eighth inning. Ankiel was taken off the field on a cart, largely for precautionary reasons, and then moved to a local hospital. General manager John Mozeliak reported that Ankiel had feeling in his hands, arms and legs.

Mozeliak said that Dr. George Paletta, the Cardinals' medical supervisor, had told him that Ankiel had passed all the early neurological tests "and that was encouraging."

"He was never knocked out. He never lost consciousness," said Mozeliak.

Manager Tony La Russa's observation was that Ankiel "got a pretty good whiplash and he had some puffiness in his face. We'll have to see."

Left fielder Chris Duncan, first on the scene after Ankiel hit the wall, said he asked Ankiel if he was OK and advised Ankiel to stay put. Duncan said Ankiel told him, "I just don't want to move."

Just before midnight, the club announced that Ankiel underwent X-rays and a CT scan of his head, neck and back. Both the X-rays and CT scan were negative and showed no fractures. Ankiel remained in the hospital overnight.

PHILLIES 6, CARDINALS 1: RHP Kyle Lohse had given up just one homer in his first 35 innings, but after being hit on the left elbow by a pitch from Philadelphia RHP Joe Blanton in the third inning, he gave up six runs in the next two innings, all on homers.

Manager Tony La Russa said that Lohse wasn't the same pitcher in the fourth and fifth after he was hit by the pitch.
