Cards looking elsewhere for LHP reliever options

The Cardinals, seeking a bullpen complement to left-hander Trever Miller, are exploring the remaining lefties on the free-agent market, according to major-league sources.

Dennys Reyes' agent, Casey Close, is informing clubs that his client is close to a decision. The pitcher will not be going to the A's, the team to which he has been most closely linked, a source said.

Ohman has received offers from the Pirates, Marlins and Padres. Like Reyes, he also has drawn interest from the Cardinals and Phillies. His preference is to play for a contender.

Joe Beimel, the third lefty on the market, could get a second look from the A's now that Reyes is headed elsewhere. The A's contacted Beimel's agent earlier this offseason.

Royce Ring, Charlie Manning and non-roster invitee Ian Ostlund are among the pitchers competing to be the second left-hander in the Cardinals' bullpen, but the team apparently is not satisfied with its current options.

"They're going to have to start showing something that enables us to give them more opportunities to pitch," Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Tuesday.
