The Cardinals came to bat in the top of the ninth tied with the Nationals 4-4. Washington had a Lear inning, where just when you think things couldnt get worse, they did. After a walk and a double put the Cardinals ahead with one out, the Cardinals loaded the bases. Zimmerman tried to bare-hand a squibber down the line, but he missed the ball completely. It sat there as Thurston rounded third. The shortstop picked it up and threw home, but the catcher dropped for an error. A balk forces home another run, and a sac fly finished it off. The Cardinals scored five in the inning, and a close game becomes a rout.
Washington goes into the bottom of the ninth trailing 9-4.
